RAPID FIRE Q&A WITH MONSHELL LATISÉ

Q: Can you share a little bit about your background?

A: I was raised in North Philadelphia. I am of Black, Native American and Mexican descent. My mother taught me to hand sew when I was a young child and I began making clothes for my dolls. From a very young age I loved picking out my own clothes and shoes. When I was in high school my grandmother gifted me a sewing machine. I taught myself to use the machine and I started making my own clothes. I would cut up my brother’s sports teams jerseys and make outfits and swimsuits. I would also make my own prom gowns. As people saw me wearing my designs I began to build clientele and then designed and made costume clothes for others. While in college, I participated in various charity fashion shows.

I went to Temple University for undergraduate studies and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and student at West Chester University for graduate studies and earned a Master’s degree in Counselor Education. I have been working with the youth and college students over the past 20 years. I counseled students with overcoming barriers and supporting them with their post-secondary goals.

Q: What inspired you to launch Monshell Latisé?

A: Launching Monshell Latisé has been a dream of mine since I was in middle school. So much so that I created mock business cards while in school. I was inspired to officially launch Monshell Latisé after having constant dreams about it. Having worked as a school counselor for a very long time and encouraging my students to pursue their dreams and passions. I felt it was time to practice what I preached. I decided to fuse my passion for encouraging and empowering others with my passion for fashion.

Q: What makes Monshell Latisé unique?

A: Monshell Latisé inspires self-expression and individuality. The pieces that I create are versatile and allow customers to style them in ways that resonate with their personal tastes.

Q: Best advice you’ve ever received or advice you would like to share with aspiring founders and entrepreneurs?

A: I received lots of great advice over the years, but the thing that sticks with me the most was an action-love. Growing up I was surrounded by love from my family.
